Health Resources & Services Administration (HRSA)’s Geriatrics Workforce Enhancement Program (GWEP)

ENGAGE – IL was made possible by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DDHS), HRSA GWEP Grant #U1QHP28730 in 2015. UIC received $2.5 million, to develop and implement a GWEP project focusing on education and training of healthcare professionals to meet the needs of older adults, including education and training on Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. GWEP supports the development of a health care workforce that improves health outcomes for older adults by integrating geriatrics with primary care, maximizing patient and family engagement, and transforming the healthcare system.
In 2018, the GWEP grant was extended for an additional one year.  During that year, HRSA accepted proposals for a new GWEP award focusing on Building Age-Friendly Health Systems and Workforce.

In July 2019, UIC was awarded a new $3.75 million GWEP grant (#U1QHP287300400) to Build Age-Friendly Health Systems and establish Dementia-Friendly Communities. Our new program, ENGAGE-IL 2.0 has four primary objectives and nine programs.
